Sleepy Squats

I have been sleeping terribly lately and have not quite figured out what the issue is. Some possible problems I have hypothesized have been:

  •  New Bed?: We did get a new bed – it is an Olympic Queen versus a regular Queen, but the mattress is much harder than what I have been used to so I thought that might be part of the issue, but it has been a month with the new bed. I did change the comforter to our old comforter which was down and fluffy versus the thin hard one we had originally on the new bed.

  • Wet Head? I have reverted back to showering at night. I normally shower at night, but over the summer I tried showering in the morning which was working out well, until the mornings became frigid again and trying to deal with being that wet and cold is just not tolerable. Plus, with evening workouts it is just gross to go to bed without showering. I have thick hair so it takes forever to dry. I have been blow drying it but once I lay down I inevitably find a wet spot and lay on it all night and get cold. So I have been working on drying my hair even better. Thus far, it has mildly improved me sleep.

  • Timing of eating?: Since working out after work, I usually do not get home until at least 8 pm. I then usually shower immediately (in order to get the hair drying process going) and by then I usually eat a bit of dinner. Since I am not eating until 8:30 pm, and I like to try to go to bed by 9 pm… its not a great scenario. So I decided to try eating before going to the gym yesterday. BAD idea. I had half a sandwich one hour before Crossfit, and felt like I was going to throw up the whole time. So, maybe just tiny meals before and after OR skipping dinner (which I do not think I will be able to do.)

  • Peeing: Tuesday nights issue obviously was having to get up and pee a million times. Not really sure the solution there other than not drinking as much water at yoga, but alas, that may lead to passing out.

  • I already try to use my bed only for sleeping, not over sleeping, and trying to relax before bed etc. which leads me to the final issue:
Loud Husband: Jordan always complains that I am “only home for half an hour a day” since I usually get home at 8 and try to go to bed by 9 pm. (Which, hey honey, that’s an hour!) So the time I am home, he likes to tell me about everything. Which is all well and good, but he has trouble with volume control. There is no difference between when he is talking at a loud party to a group of people than just talking to me in bed while I am trying to go to sleep. We (read: I) have been trying to work on “bed time” voices, but it has not been working very well thus far.

In conclusion, I will continue to play around with factors involved in my sleep and see how it goes. Any suggestions on ways to improve sleep?

On the plus side, Leo does not seem to be losing any sleep over the matter!

On another note:

Wednesdays WOD this week was just mean. MEAN!

100 front squats. With 3 burpees between every time you drop the bar.
That was it.

100 squats… that would be tough.
100 back squats – that would be tougher.
100 front squats- UGH!

It is the most awkward hand grip ever. I feel like I did not been get a leg/ butt workout – it was just wrist torture. I was doing like sets of 2 squats because I couldn’t keep my wrist in that position. In conclusion, I did A LOT of burpees!

awkward front squat hand position

I honestly stopped counting at some point (I am a really bad counter—I tend to get up to 10 and start over). I stopped after 20 minutes of squatting and burpee-ing which was about 2 minutes after everyone else finished.

I felt a bit like a failure since I didn’t know if I actually completed the workout. My wrists are killing me today, whereas my legs feel fine… which indicates my form was not very good. . Gives me something to improve upon anyway- Front squat position!

How do you have time to blog??

I am chronically complaining that I have no time. Clearly the truth is I have 24 hours in a day just like everyone else, I just need to learn to manipulate my schedule a lil better.

My current Schedule includes:

* Massachusetts General Hospital ~ 20 hours/ week
* Boston University Teaching Assistant ~ 20 hours/ week
* St. Elizabeth's Per Diem ~20-40 hours/ week
* Caritas Carney Hospital 5 hrs/ week (plus annoyingly long commute)

* Class Not as much time as I should be spending on it!

I have also learned that all work and no play really does make Johnny (erm, Jamie) a dull girl. During my undergrad I started off as Pre-med... lets just say "pre-med weed out classes" have their purpose, and I was definitely weeded out. Consequently my GPA was pretty abysmal Freshman year, and every year after that was basically struggling to bring it up. I unfortunately focused so much on school work and not enough on the rest of life.

I am back to trying to create a balance between school, work, playtime, me time, and the ever-important sleep that I frequently neglect.

Usually when I get busy things get eliminated in this order:
1. Working out
2. Sleep
3. Going Out
4. Showering
5. work/school work
6. Eating....
I somehow always make time for eating, whenever I am really busy or struggling financially my parents always ask if I am eating ok, I inform them that is one of my top priorities and it tends not to get cut out... I can do without a lot but we all have out little luxuries. I may not cook persay, but I'll take the time to eat something.

I've also come to realize- I can't do work ALL the time, no matter how I try. I always feel guilty if I am not at least attempting to do something productive. At any given time I can usually be found with something I need to do (for instance, last Friday I went out with my Labs quizzes to grade in case I had time on the train... )

But really - somethings require more mental energy than is available in a short period of time such as on your commute or when I want to multitask at work during my lunch break...

I have started taking the Metro when I go on the T, because that tiny bit of news may be just as valuable as that one paper I wind up half-heartedly grading, and when I have a spare 5 minutes at work, or before bed, I write blogs rather than logging onto Blackboard and trying to work on a homework assignment that I really need to just sit down and do when I have an hour to dedicate to it.

Life is all about balance. And I am working to reprioritize and reorganize myself. So, despite my "lack of time", I hope to continue to take a little bit of time out of my day for myself, such as through blogging, and making time for friends and family <3

Keepin' Busy!

Today is off to a fine start.

This past week I had a temp job working at a medical convention, and had my 30 hour weekend at MGH, which meant I had to be up between 4:30 and 6 am every day. Also, I had house guests for three nights in a row, which meant I did not get to bed before midnight anyday. In conclusion: I was sleep deprived.

Last night I went to bed around midnight, and proceeded to wake up at 6:00, since thats been the regular time of waking up. However, I stayed in bed until 11 am. It was grand!

at 11 my phone rang, and it was a woman from St. Elizabeths where I had applied for a job, and I was informed that she was interested in me, so I have to head down there to fill out some paper work before I actually get an interview. I'm not positive that it will actually work out since I have an obnoxious schedule to work around (Mon, Wed not avail til after noon, Never avail Friday, available every other weekend? what the hell...) Plus I can probably get more hours at MGH as of July.
But anyway- in this time of economic hardship- its always nice to potentially have three jobs :)

So, Following my own advise from yesterday, when I finally got up, I compiled my list of things to do.

So the POA (plan of action! I've been trying to get this accronym into popular culture for a while now)
1. Breakfast
2. Send MSDA Meeting Reminder (anyone interested - Wed. May 20th, 6 pm Tufts.)
3. Head to campus- print Resume + Ex Phys stuff
4. Return Library Book
5. Quickie Jobs?
6. Head to St. E's - fill out paper work.
7. BDay Present for Amiga

____
Time Permitting:
8. Gym
9. Shower
10. Clean room
11. Blog- Because I am trying to take pictures again!

So, I'm getting off to a late start, but I shall hit the ground running. And I'm Off!
